In 2022, fans celebrated the 23rd birthday of Jaemin (재민) of NCT DREAM with ads across sets of digital screens in a Seoul subway station. Every screen says "재민아 생일축하해" ("Jaemin, happy birthday"), and the small print reads "CHINA JAEMIN BAR & CHINESE FANS". Below is a look at the display, followed by how fans abroad can plan their own.

Where was the ad displayed?

Our photos show three groups of screens in the same station: a frame of four on a tiled wall, a frame of three on another wall, and a long row of twelve along a sloping passage.

Signs beside them mark the way to Line 6, with the directions Mangwon, Eungam, Sangsu and Sinnae. The station's own name is not visible and is not in our records, so we do not name it.

What did the ad look like?

All the screens follow one template, and each one changes the colour and the photo.

At the top left, two small tags read "HAPPY" and "23RD BIRTHDAY", with "JAEMIN 08.13" beneath them. The middle of the screen is an arch-shaped window holding a photo. Across the bottom of the photo, the greeting "재민아 생일축하해" is written in chunky letters, with a black label under it reading "HAPPY JAEMIN DAY". A coloured band at the very bottom carries two lines: "HAPPY 23RD BIRTHDAY TO JAEMIN" and "COPYRIGHTS 2022 © CHINA JAEMIN BAR & CHINESE FANS".

The backgrounds run through yellow, pink, red, sky blue, orange, teal and green. Faint giant numerals, "813", sit behind each arch.

In the row of twelve, each screen has its own photo, some from stage performances and some from photo shoots, so the passage shows a dozen different looks in the same frame design.

When did it run?

The screens name 13 August and the bottom line prints "2022", so this ad marked 13 August 2022. We have no record of the exact days it was on.

Who organized it?

The credit on every screen is "CHINA JAEMIN BAR & CHINESE FANS". We repeat it exactly as printed. It is a clear example of fans in another country putting a birthday message inside a Seoul station.

What is a subway digital screen ad?

These are upright screens fixed to station walls in sets of a few, or in long rows along passages. The artwork is sent as image files, one per screen.

A template like this one is a smart way to fill many screens. The fans designed one frame, then swapped the colour and the photo. That keeps every screen looking like part of one campaign, and it makes the work lighter: only the first design has to be built from scratch. The greeting is the same everywhere, so a commuter who glances at any one screen still gets the whole message.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

You can organize a display like this from wherever you live:

  1. Choose the occasion and the date.
  2. Choose the format and place: station screens, a lightbox, a city bus or another spot.
  3. Prepare the wording and the photos, and check that you have the right to use them. For screens, count how many images you need.
  4. Send us your idea. We will reply with the options open for your dates.

Adding your fan group's name to the artwork, as here, is up to you.
