Fans in Thailand welcomed actor Seo Kang-joon (서강준) back with a lightbox ad at Hakdong Station in Seoul. The panel says "Welcome Back!" above his name, and a handwritten Korean message reads "강준아 전역 축하해 / 언제나 우리가 곁에 있을게 ♡" ("Kang-joon, congratulations on your discharge. We'll always be by your side."). The ad is filed in our 2023 archive. Here is a closer look and a short guide for fans in other countries.

Where was the ad displayed?

Our photos are filed under Hakdong Station on Line 7, lightbox position LB05. The panel hangs in a black frame on a white tiled wall with a band of teal and beige shapes. In a wider photo from the same folder, another advertiser's lightbox is on the wall to its right.

We do not have the booking dates, so the run dates are blank.

What did the ad look like?

The right side of the panel is a large portrait. He is smiling, with his chin resting on his hand, and wears a white shirt. The left side is a dark blue background with big, soft circles of yellow, gold and blue light, like street lamps out of focus. A thin white line frames the text area.

The words are arranged from top to bottom. "Welcome Back!" comes first in white script. Then his name, "SEO KANG JUN", in heavy white capitals with a slight shadow. Below that are the two lines of Korean in a rounded handwriting style, ending with a small heart.

The name on the ad is spelled "Kang Jun". In this article we use "Kang-joon", the spelling most English-language sources use for him.

Who organized it?

The bottom right corner carries the credit "SEOKANGJUN THAI FAN" and a social media handle next to it. That tells us the ad came from fans in Thailand. We keep to the printed credit and do not add anything about the group.

For fans who wonder whether a message from far away can reach a Seoul station, this panel is one answer.

What is a subway lightbox ad?

A lightbox is a framed print on a station wall with lights behind it. Fans choose it because the panel is large, bright and stays in place.

This one shows how well the format suits a greeting in two languages. The English headline is easy for visitors to read, and the Korean lines speak to him and to local passers-by. Keeping each language to one or two short lines leaves the portrait plenty of room.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

A welcome-back ad is planned around one day, and it can be organized from any country:

  1. Decide the occasion and the date, such as a discharge day or a return to work.
  2. Choose the medium and the place: a station lightbox, a screen door, digital screens or a bus.
  3. Prepare the message and photo, and check that you have the right to use the photo. If you write in Korean, ask a fluent speaker to read it over.
  4. Send us your idea. We will reply with the options that are open for your dates.

Dates like these are known well ahead, so early planning gives you a wider choice of stations.
