In April 2018, fans celebrated the 7th anniversary of Apink (에이핑크) with an ad on a Seoul city bus. A pink banner reading "에이핑크 7주년 축하합니다!" ("Congratulations on Apink's 7th anniversary!") ran along both sides of the bus, and a matching strip crossed the back. The ad is signed "China Baidu Apink Bar". Here is what it looked like, and how fans abroad can plan something similar.
Where was the ad displayed?
The ad was on the outside of a blue Seoul city bus. The bus carries the number 721 on its side and rear window in our photos. The artwork was placed in three spots: the road side, the door side and the rear.
We don't have a record of the exact days the ad ran, so we have left the dates out instead of guessing.
What did the ad look like?
The design uses a white checked background, like notebook paper, inside a deep pink frame, with small red hearts scattered around the text.
Road side. The main panel shows a group photo of Apink on the left and the headline "에이핑크 7주년 축하합니다!" on the right in bold pink letters. Under the headline, a small line reads "CHINA BAIDU APINK BAR". Near the back of the bus there is a smaller panel that looks like a handwritten note. The writing is too small to read in our photo, so we are not quoting it.
Door side. A long banner carries the same headline in one line, again with "CHINA BAIDU APINK BAR" beneath it. On the other side of the door, a taller panel shows the six members with a handwritten-style message: "영원히 사랑해 / 영원히 함께해 / 영원히 우리는 에이핑크!" In English, that is roughly "Love you forever, together forever, forever we are Apink!" The panel is signed "Chinese Panda ♥ Always With Apink".
Rear. A strip above the tail lights shows the date "2018.04.19", a row of member photos and the words "에이핑크 7주년" ("Apink 7th anniversary").
When did it run?
Our photos of the bus were taken on 12 April 2018, one week before the date printed on the rear strip. That tells us the ad was already on the road ahead of the anniversary. We don't know when it came down.
Who organized it?
The ad itself names "China Baidu Apink Bar" and is signed "Chinese Panda". That is all we can say for certain, so we keep to the words on the ad.
It is a good example of something many fans ask us about: you can be in another country and still put a message for your artist on the streets of Seoul.
What is a Seoul bus exterior ad?
A bus exterior ad is artwork printed on panels fixed to the outside of a city bus. Unlike a poster in one station, the message travels along the bus route through the day, so it is seen by people on the street and in other cars.
One bus gives you several surfaces. As this ad shows, the two sides and the rear can each carry a different layout: a long banner, a taller panel with a photo, and a narrow strip with a date. Fans often use that to pair a short headline with a longer personal message.
How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?
You do not need to be in Korea to plan an ad like this. In general, the steps are:
- Choose the occasion and the date you want to celebrate.
- Decide where you would like the ad to appear: a city bus, a subway station or another spot.
- Prepare your message and photos, and make sure you have the right to use them.
- Send us your idea. We will reply with the options that are open for your dates.
Dated ads like anniversaries and birthdays need time for artwork and booking, so it helps to start early.
