In June 2018, fans in Latin America celebrated the 5th anniversary of BTS (방탄소년단) with an ad on a Seoul city bus. Purple panels carried the words "Happy 5th Anniversary! 0613", messages in Korean, and rows of national flags. The rear strip is signed "BTS LATIN AMERICA FANBASES". Here is a closer look, followed by a short guide for fans who want to do the same from abroad.
Where was the ad displayed?
The ad was on the outside of a blue Seoul city bus. The number 273 appears on the side, on the front display and in the rear window in our photos. The artwork covered three places: the road side, the door side and the rear.
We don't have a record of the stops where the bus was seen or of the exact days the ad ran, so those are left out.
What did the ad look like?
Every panel uses a deep purple background with thin, looping white lines drawn across it.
Road side. The main panel shows a group photo of the seven members on the left. On the right, in white brush script, it says "Happy 5th Anniversary!" with "0613" in bold numbers underneath. Further back, a square panel is filled with small national flags arranged into two tall shapes, with the Korean words "라틴아메리카 아미" ("Latin America ARMY") below them.
Door side. A long banner reads "라틴아메리카는 방탄을 사랑합니다!" and, in smaller capitals, "LATIN AMERICA LOVES BTS!" On the other side of the door, a second panel has a row of flags along the top and bottom and a message in the middle: "멀리서도 아무런 조건 없이 응원할거야", which means roughly "Even from far away, we will cheer for you with no conditions". Under it is the line "ARMY X BTS".
Rear. The strip above the tail lights reads "We never walk alone" in white script, framed by a pair of wings, with "BTS LATIN AMERICA FANBASES" in capitals beneath.
When did it run?
We photographed the bus on 9 June 2018, four days before the "0613" printed on the ad. So the ad was already in service ahead of that date. We don't know when it was removed.
Who organized it?
The rear strip names "BTS Latin America Fanbases", and the side panels say "Latin America ARMY" in Korean. That wording, together with the flags, is everything the ad tells us, and we are not adding to it.
What it does show clearly is distance. The fans behind this ad were on the other side of the world, and their message still travelled through Seoul.
What is a Seoul bus exterior ad?
A bus exterior ad is a set of printed panels on the outside of a city bus. Each side has room for a long panel and a shorter one, and the rear takes a narrow strip. As the bus works its route, the ad is seen from the pavement on one side and from traffic on the other.
For fans writing from abroad, this layout is helpful. One surface can speak in Korean to people on the street, another can carry an English line, and a third can show where the greeting comes from. This ad uses all three ideas at once.
How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?
You do not have to travel to Korea to organise an anniversary ad. The process generally goes like this:
- Settle on the occasion and the date to celebrate.
- Decide where the ad should run: a city bus, a subway station or another spot.
- Prepare the message and photos, and confirm you have the right to use them.
- Share the idea with us. We will reply with the options that are open for your dates.
If your message is in another language, think about adding a Korean line as these fans did. Send us the meaning you want and check the final Korean wording carefully before printing.
