Fans celebrated the birthday of Chanyeol (찬열) of EXO with ads on upright digital screens in a Seoul subway station. Our photos show a set of four screens reading "Happy Chanyeol day" and a long row of ten screens reading "HAPPY LOEY DAY". One set is signed "LOVE FROM CHINESE FANS". This page walks through the ads and explains how fans abroad can plan the same kind of display.
Where was the ad displayed?
The screens were on the walls of transfer passages inside a subway station. Signs in our photos point to Line 2 (towards Dangsan, Sindorim, Sadang and Seoul National University of Education) and Line 6 (towards Eungam and Sinnae).
No station name board appears in the photos, and we have no record of the name, so we stop at what the signs say. The display dates are not recorded.
What did the ad look like?
The set of four. Four screens sit together in one black frame. Each shows a different photo on a bright background with the same decorations: a cassette tape at the top, a balloon reading "CHANYEOL" with the Korean line "찬열아 생일 축하해" ("Chanyeol, happy birthday"), and the script headline "Happy Chanyeol day". A small label says "STAY WITH CHANYEOL". The bottom line of each screen starts "LOVE FROM CHINESE FANS", followed by names in Chinese characters.
The row of ten. Along a longer passage, ten screens stand in a line, and no two are the same. The first two read "HAPPY LOEY DAY" with "찬열아 사랑해" ("Chanyeol, we love you") in brush lettering and "NOV.27TH" in the corner. Others use red and gold, pale blue, comic-book colours and neon purple. Several repeat "찬열아 사랑해", and one carries the number "1127".
A pair. One photo shows two screens beside a transfer sign: a still, purple portrait with "HAPPY LOEY DAY" in tall green letters, next to one of the cassette designs.
When did it run?
The artwork gives the day, "NOV.27TH" and "1127", and no year. Our photos have no date either, so the year is left out.
Who organized it?
The cassette designs say "LOVE FROM CHINESE FANS" and list names in Chinese. That is the credit as printed. The row of ten has small lines of text at the bottom of each screen that we cannot read in our photos, so we don't know whether the same fans made both sets.
What is a subway digital screen ad?
These are upright screens, a little like large phone displays, fixed to station walls in groups. Because they are screens, the artwork is supplied as an image file instead of being printed, and one booking usually covers a group of screens together.
That is what makes this format popular for birthdays. With ten screens you can show ten photos. Some fan groups hand each screen to a different artist, as this row seems to do, and the passage turns into a small gallery that people walk through.
How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?
Planning a screen display from abroad works like this:
- Choose the occasion and the date.
- Choose the format and place: station screens, a lightbox, a bus or another spot.
- Prepare the designs and photos, one file per screen if you want variety, and make sure you may use every photo.
- Send us your idea. We will reply with the options open for your dates.
When many fans contribute designs, agree on one deadline so all files arrive together.
