In March 2019, fans wished Miyawaki Sakura (미야와키 사쿠라) of IZ*ONE a happy birthday with ads on Seoul city buses. The pale pink design, scattered with cherry blossoms, carries the greeting "꾸라야 생일축하해" ("Happy birthday, Kkura") and the credit "SakuraSake_ChinaFanclub". Below we describe what the ad looked like and how fans abroad can plan one of their own.
Where was the ad displayed?
The ads were on the outside of blue Seoul city buses. Our side photos show a bus numbered 342. Our rear photo, taken a day later, shows a bus numbered 721 with a strip from the same design. So the artwork appeared on at least two buses.
We have no record of the stops where the buses were seen or of the days the ads ran, and we have not guessed.
What did the ad look like?
Every panel uses soft pink and white tones with cherry blossom shapes and small hearts. The lettering looks like brush handwriting in pink.
Road side. The long panel has a photo of Sakura on the left and the greeting "꾸라야 생일축하해" across the rest of the space. A pink label with a flower at each end reads "SakuraSake_ChinaFanclub". Near the front wheel, a smaller upright panel shows a second photo and the name "Miyawaki" in script. The other lines on that small panel are too blurred in our photo to quote.
Door side. A long banner reads "태양은 영원히 비춰서 달은 영원히 빛난다", roughly "The sun shines forever, so the moon glows forever", with the fan club label under it and three small hearts. On the other side of the door, a square panel shows the numbers "1998 0319" at the top, a photo framed by blossoms, and her name in Korean, "미야와키 사쿠라".
Rear. On the second bus, a strip above the tail lights reads "0319 HAPPY KKURA DAY" in white and pink letters, with a photo at the right end and the same fan club name in small type.
When did it run?
The side photos were taken on 15 March 2019 and the rear photo on 16 March 2019. The ad itself shows "0319", so the buses were already carrying the greeting a few days before that date. We don't know how long the ads stayed up.
Who organized it?
Each panel carries the name "SakuraSake_ChinaFanclub". We are repeating it exactly as it is printed, and we have nothing to add beyond that.
What is a Seoul bus exterior ad?
It is printed artwork fixed to the outer body of a city bus: the two long sides under the windows and, if you choose, a strip across the back. Because the bus is on the road for most of the day, people meet the ad at crossings, at stops and from other vehicles.
This project shows two things fans often ask about. First, one design can be adapted to very different shapes: a long greeting, a square portrait panel with a date, and a narrow rear strip with a short English line. Second, the same design can go on more than one bus, which spreads a birthday greeting across more than one route.
How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?
The fan club credited on this ad shows that it can be done from outside Korea. In outline:
- Decide on the occasion and the date. For a birthday, that is the date you want the ad to be visible around.
- Decide on the place: a city bus, a subway station or somewhere else.
- Prepare the wording and photos, and confirm that you have the right to use each photo.
- Send us the plan. We will answer with the options that are open for those dates.
Korean nicknames and handwriting-style fonts, like the ones here, are welcome. Send the text as typed characters as well as in the artwork so nothing is misread.
