Walk down a certain stairway in a Seoul subway station and the first thing you would have seen, straight ahead and above your head, was "S.COUPS - DAY -". Fans placed this birthday ad for S.Coups (에스쿱스) of SEVENTEEN in a lit frame over the stairs. The S.Coups birthday ad adds, in Korean handwriting, "승철아 생일 축하해": "Happy birthday, Seungcheol." Here is what it looked like and how fans overseas can plan a similar one.

Where was the ad displayed?

The ad was in a lightbox mounted high on the tiled wall above a stairway inside a Seoul subway station. Our photo was taken from the top of the stairs. At the bottom of the steps, a hanging sign reads "갈아타는 곳 Transfer" with the green Line 2 symbol and an arrow.

That tells us the stairway leads toward a Line 2 transfer, but the station's own name is not visible, so we are not naming it. The photo is undated, and we have no record of the display dates.

What did the ad look like?

The frame is a single field of violet blue with all the text in a pale mint green.

Left. A stage photo of the singer in a black T-shirt, with dark hair falling over his forehead. Behind him, the digits "0808" are drawn very large as thin green outlines, running off the edge of the frame.

Top line. Three small items are spaced across the top like a ticket header: "B DAY", "1995" and "0808". The tiny word "SEVENTEEN" sits beneath them.

Centre right. An oval holds "950808" between two asterisks. Below it, in a wide classic serif, is "S.COUPS" and then "- DAY -".

The greeting. Under the title is the handwritten-style line "승철아 생일 축하해".

The credit. Two lines of very small capitals close the design. The first begins "SPECIAL THANKS TO" and is too small to read fully in our photo, so we are not quoting the rest. The second reads "CHINA S.COUPS FANS & CHINA S.COUPS BAR".

Who organized it?

The ad credits "CHINA S.COUPS FANS & CHINA S.COUPS BAR". We give the line as printed. As with other ads in our archive signed by fans in China, the greeting itself is written in Korean, for the people who use the station every day.

What is a subway lightbox ad?

A lightbox is a framed, back-lit panel fixed to a station wall. Most are at eye level along corridors. Some, like this one, sit above stairways, facing everyone who comes down.

That position changes how the ad is seen. People approach it head-on for the whole length of the stairs, and nothing stands between them and the frame. A calm design with one colour and plenty of empty space, like this one, is easy to take in from that distance. The large outlined "0808" works almost as a pattern from far away and becomes a date as you get closer.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

You can set up a birthday ad in Korea from your own country. In general:

  1. Choose the occasion and the date you want to celebrate.
  2. Decide what kind of place you want: a station lightbox, a station entrance, a city bus or another location.
  3. Prepare your message and photos, and make sure you have the right to use them.
  4. Send us your idea. We will reply with the options that are open for your dates.

If several fan groups are sharing one ad, agree on the credit line before the artwork is finished. It is a part that can change late if it is left open.

The whole process is described on How It Works. To begin, request a quote. Costs depend on the ad type and the dates, so please contact us for a quote.

We share past fan ads as examples of what fans have done. If you would like this page changed or removed, please use our removal request form.
