In March 2018, fans put a birthday message for Eunhyuk (은혁) of SUPER JUNIOR on a Seoul city bus. The main banner says "HAPPY EUNHYUK DAY", a smaller panel carries the numbers "1986 0404", and the rear strip is signed "SHINEHYUK & CHINAELF". Here is a closer look at the Eunhyuk birthday ad and at how fans abroad can set up something similar.

Where was the ad displayed?

The ad was on the outside of a green Seoul city bus. In our photos the bus shows the number 2016 on its side and in the rear window. That is the bus number, not a year. The artwork covered the road side, the door side and the rear.

We do not have the route details or the exact display dates on file, so they are left out.

What did the ad look like?

All of the panels share a pale sky-blue background with small stars, hearts and arrow shapes, and each one uses a cut-out photo.

Road side. The long banner reads "HAPPY" and "EUNHYUK DAY" in pink block letters on either side of a photo. Behind the rear wheel, a smaller panel decorated with gem shapes carries a short line in Korean, "늘 이렇게 함께해줘" ("Always stay with us like this"), and the credit line at the bottom.

Door side. The banner here is all text: "그저 널 보는 걸로 행복해", with a red heart at each end. In English: "Just seeing you makes me happy." Beside the door, a taller panel stacks the numbers "1986" and "0404" over a small ribbon that reads "Happy Birthday".

Rear. The strip across the back reads "4랑에 4랑을 더한 은혁데이". It is a play on words: the Korean word for love, "사랑" (sarang), starts with the same sound as the number four, "사" (sa), so the fans wrote it with a 4 to echo the date 04.04. The line means roughly "Eunhyuk Day, love added to love." Under it, in small capitals: "SHINEHYUK & CHINAELF".

When did it run?

The photos we hold are dated 16 March 2018. With "0404" printed on the ad, that puts the bus on the road nearly three weeks ahead of the date. How long it stayed up afterwards is not something we can confirm.

Who organized it?

The name on the ad is "SHINEHYUK & CHINAELF". It appears on the rear strip and at the foot of the small side panel. We repeat it as printed and have nothing further to add about the group.

Fans often ask whether an ad in Seoul can be arranged from another country. This bus is one answer.

What is a Seoul bus exterior ad?

A bus exterior ad uses the painted body of a city bus as its canvas. Printed sheets are fixed along the lower sides and across the back, and the bus then carries them along its normal route all day.

What stands out on this bus is how the wordplay is spread out. A reader sees the date on one panel, the name on another and the pun on the rear, and the pieces fit together as the bus goes past. Short lines work well for that, because each surface is only in view for a few seconds.

How can fans overseas place a similar ad in Korea?

You can plan a birthday ad in Korea without being here. The steps generally run like this:

  1. Decide on the occasion and the date you want to mark.
  2. Choose where the ad should go: on a city bus, in a subway station or at another location.
  3. Write your message, gather your photos, and confirm you are allowed to use them.
  4. Send the idea to us. We will answer with what is available for the dates you have in mind.

A birthday has a fixed date, so the artwork and the booking both need to be finished before it. Starting early leaves room for changes.
